I have never hitch-hiked, but when I drove a company car in the 1970s, I did pick up (solo) hitch-hikers frequently. I was telling my boss about a soldier I gave a lift to one day, and he went ballistic. Apparently, hitch-hikers are not covered by insurance in company cars, only employees and spouses. He told me in no uncertain terms to never do that again. I never found out if he was telling me the truth.
Best wishes, Pete.

It may be against company rules (my company said the same) but if you think about it motor insurance has to include passengers – authorised or not.
